Russian hackers have reportedly exploited security flaws in a Melbourne web hosting business to corrupt potentially hundreds of Australian businesses’ websites.

Over the past two weeks servers administered by MD Web Hosting were hacked into and used as a portal to allow hackers to insert malicious code into hosted websites, The Australian reports today.

The code reportedly causes unauthorised web links to appear in the websites targeted by the hackers.

MD business services manager Tom Nadja has admitted that the company’s security profile, IP blocking systems and firewalls had been inadequate to stop the hackers.

The company has now developed a solution to the problem, which is currently being rolled out across its servers.
