Applications for Apple’s iPhone have seen the device turned into a pint of beer or even a lightsabre, but a new program can now turn the gadget into a working smartcard.

German company Charismathics have revealed its iEnigma application, which works as a two-factor authentication tool – improving security by requesting a password along with a physical object.

The application works by downloading the application on to the iPhone and installing software on a computer. The software provides the iPhone with a “token”, which the computer recognises once a password is entered into the iPhone.

The computer can only be accessed once the correct password is put into the iPhone.

“You can make easy use of your VPN tracker, your mail, your login, whatever is already installed in your computer, but with the added security of two-factor authentication,” Charismathics chief executive Sven Gobel tells itnews.com.au.
