Amazon is planning to accelerate its progress from internet bookstore to all-round online entertainment megalith by introducing streaming video to the site, its chief executive says.

Dow Jones reports that Amazon boss Jeff Bezos told the D: All Things Digital conference in San Diego on Wednesday that Amazon will launch a streaming video service in the next few weeks.

“We are working on a new version of video on demand, a ‘for-pay’ streaming service we will release in the next couple of weeks. The streaming service will start instantly and it’s a la carte, for-pay,” Bezos said.

Amazon already has a downloadable video service on the site and recently launched the Kindle, a digital reading device designed to make it more attractive to download reading material.

“We’re very serious about the video business, but it is much more difficult because there are so many market participants,” Bezos said.
