The website of the country’s top intelligence agency has been crippled by an Australian branch of hacking group Anonymous, just weeks after the group took responsibility for accessing and releasing data from internet service provider AAPT.

The OperationAustralia Twitter account said this morning Asio.gov.au has been “down for some time now, and will be for the rest of the day!”

The ASIO site now appears to be working, but very slowly. However, it also appears to be taken down for short periods of time before loading back up again.

The OperationAustralia account has been threatening to attack various Australian sites for the last few weeks. It has named the ASIO site specifically.

This comes just a few weeks after it hacked into telecommunications provider AAPT, and stole customer and staff data. It then released the data online.

The attack caused a furore among business customers. The Privacy Commissioner has even confirmed it will begin an investigation into the attack.

The account has stated it will stop the attacks on ASIO at 10pm tonight.
