Sony has announced a new tablet, called the Tablet Z, following the recent announcement of its flagship XPeria Z smartphone.

Earlier this month, SmartCompany reported Sony unveiled its flagship XPeria Z smartphone at the CES in Las Vegas, which the company hopes will help it to compete against Appleโ€™s iPhone 5 and Samsungโ€™s Galaxy S3.

According to PCWorld, the Android-based tablet features a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, has a 10.1-inch screen with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and an 8-megapixel camera.

The company cites the tabletโ€™s weight and thickness as being key selling points, with the device measuring in at 6.9 mm thickness, compared to 9.4 mm for the most recent Apple iPad, and a weight of just 495 grams, compared to 652 grams for the iPad.

The device will support 4G/LTE mobile phone networks and will also feature NFC compatibility.
