Governments have been scrambling over themselves debating whether solar, wind or nuclear power will help move society away from oil dependency. But it seems the Netherlands has trumped us all.
The owners of the Natuurcafe La Port in one of the nation’s train stations have installed a power generator in the revolving door in its entrance.
The door generates about 4600kWh each year as part of a larger refurbishment of the railway system – about the amount an average household uses a year.
The generator powers the LED lights in the café’s ceiling, and if all the stored energy generated from the door is used up, they simply switch back to the building’s main supply.
