Samsung’s $US1 billion loss to Apple in a smartphone patent lawsuit and the release of Apple’s iPhone 5 unexpectedly boosted Samsung Galaxy S3 sales, according to a leading analytics firm.

The Localytics figures, compiled from analytics code in smartphone apps, reveal weekly new device growth for the Samsung Galaxy S3 stood at 9% since August 1.

However, there was a significant spike in new device growth of 16% during the week of August 21 to 27, the week Apple won over $US1 billion from Samsung in a patent infringement lawsuit.

Even more surprisingly, while weekly growth in Galaxy S3 smartphones stood at zero for the week immediately before the iPhone 5 release on September 12, there was 15% growth in the week of September 11 to 17, followed by 14% growth in the week of September 18 to 24. Following the two week spike, Samsung Galaxy S3 sales returned to its average growth rate of 9%.

The news suggests Samsung’s recent ad campaign making fun of iPhone queuers may have been effective in drawing consumers to the Korean electronics giant.
