The biggest thing in computer games over the past few years have been MMOGs – massively multiplayer online games – such as World of Warcraft. But, according to Techcrunch, there is a new form of gaming that could be set to take over; the PMOG.

PMOG, or passively multiplayer online game, is a Firefox add-on that attempts to add an element of fun to your ordinary everyday web-surfing activities. The game involves chasing, following, or hunting other players through themed online missions – one, called “Tech News Tour” involves visiting tech sites such as Engadget, Gizmodo, Digg and Slashdot.

Players get points for completing missions, but also for more mischievous activities such as leaving “mines” on websites to explode on other players. Over time, players develop characters with different characteristics and gain access to tools they can use in the game as they pick up more points.

According to TechCrunch, PMOG is developing a wide range of different story lines to keep players interested and engaged. It is currently in private beta.
