Nikon working on Android powered camera

Camera maker Nikon is planning to release a next generation digital camera powered by Android, with the company having already filed for regulatory approval for the device in Indonesia.

According to camera enthusiast website NikonRumors, the new cameras will feature:

• A 25 to 250 mm lens.
• A 3.5 inch OLED screen.
• The camera runs all Google Play apps.
• The camera will probably run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
• Built-in GPS.
• Built-in WiFi, but no mobile phone functionality.

Nikon hopes to officially announce the camera on August 22.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the device is its support for all current Android Gingerbread apps on Google Play.

This potentially means photographers will be able to retouch images directly in Photoshop Touch, rather than relying on in-camera effects, directly upload images to popular content management systems such as WordPress, or directly post high-resolution images on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

While Android is predominantly used to power smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 or tablets such as the Google Nexus 7, the new Nikon cameras will join a growing number of “smart” devices and mobile devices to use the platform.

These include retail Point of Sales systems  as well as smart TVs and set-top boxes.
