Mozilla has released a plugin for its Firefox web browser allowing it to simulate a smartphone running its forthcoming Firefox OS smartphone software.

According to Mozilla, the plugin is designed to make it easy to test apps developed for the platform ahead of its eventual release.

“The Firefox OS Simulator is different from some mobile environment simulations in that it doesnโ€™t create a virtual computer. Instead, it is actually B2G Desktop, a version of the Boot2Gecko project that is built for desktop operating systems. This allows the Simulator to run very quickly and with minimal start-up time on your computer,” Mozilla states.

Mozilla released a preview version of its Mozilla marketplace for Android devices last month ahead of the release of low-cost ZTE and Alcatel smartphones running Firefox OS early next year.
