The annual Times Higher Education Supplement has been released for 2008, with nine of Australia’s universities making the list of the top 200 universities in the world.

The Australian National University has come out as the country’s top school, maintaining its place in the top 16 for a third consecutive year – beating schools in France, Germany and China.

But the news isn’t good for other Australian universities in the top 100.

Melbourne University, following the implementation of its controversial “Melbourne model”, dropped from 27 to 38, one place behind the University of Sydney.

The University of Western Australia recorded a massive loss, dropping from last year’s 66 place to 83. Melbourne’s RMIT University has dropped out of the list entirely.

The University of Adelaide also suffered, slipping from last year’s 62nd place to 106.

Three other schools managed to break the top 50, with the University of Queensland at 43, the University of NSW at 45 and Monash University at 47.

Macquarie University was the lowest Australian uni on the list at 182.

Once again, Harvard University has taken top honours, while Yale University and the University of Cambridge stole second and third place respectively. The University of Oxford and California Institute of Technology completed the top five.
