RS Components has launched the Raspberry Pi computer in Australia, offering the device for $40 delivered.
However, according to CRN, users ordering the device should expect long wait times due to anticipated demand.
The credit-card sized system is built around the Broadcom BCM2835 system-on-a-chip, which includes a 700 MHz ARM CPU, VideoCore IV GPU and 256 MB of RAM. The device doesn’t include a monitor, keyboard, mouse, hard disk or sold state storage, all of which have to be purchased separately and attached to system via USB or HDMI.
The small form factor and extremely low cost of the device has seen it used in numerous niche applications from mobile device prototyping to the back-up server market (especially for applications where regular human input isn’t required).
It managed to sell out overseas shortly after its initial release in March this year.
