The State Government of Victoria has awarded Motorola Solutions a four-year $130 million extension to the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority contract.

According to CRN, the ESTA contract extension will see Motorola Solutions, along with Melbourne-based systems integrator Crosscom, will operate the Metropolitan Mobile Radio (MMR) network until 2016, with an option for a further four year contract extension afterwards.

Established in 2004, the MMR has been operated as a private public partnership between ESTA and Motorola Mobility. Since then, the system has been used to co-ordinate emergency response operations, including forming an essential part of the command and control operations during the Black Saturday Bushfires.

Motorola Solutions is a government and enterprise communications company that was spun off from its consumer-focused sister company, Motorola Mobility, last year. In turn, Motorola Mobility is in the process or merging with Google.
