A new version of the Wine package has been released, improving audio and video compatibility for Windows programmes running on Unix-based systems.

According to The-H,ย other features include support for ActiveX, animated cursors, and better support for .NET service pack installers.

Wine is an open source application compatibility layer allowing Windows programmes to run in Unix-based operating systems, including Linux, Solaris, BSD, and Apple Mac OS-X. While it is not technically an emulator (Wine is an acronym for Wine Is Not An Emulator), it is considered as such by many of its users.

Wine also forms the basis of CodeWeaver’s commercial CrossOver products (such as CrossOver Office and CrossOver Games.

A database of Windows applications and their compatibility is available on the Wine website.ย
