HP chief executive Meg Whitman confirmed the company is working on tablets powered by Windows 8 but would not reveal any more details, the Los Angeles Times has reported.

Whitman said that tablets would launch next year and that the company would also be adapting a more streamlined approach to its products.

“We’re at the beginning stages of a new segment in personal computing,” Whitman said.

โ€œAnd I am a big believer in doing a small number of things really, really well โ€“ set them up, knock them down, set them up, knock them down.โ€

The confirmation comes after weeks of speculation that HP would spin off its PC business, although the company eventually shot those rumours down.
