American telecommunications giant Sprint has hinted that the age of unlimited downloads for mobiles may come to an end.

Chief technology officer Stephen Bye spoke at the GigaOm Mobilize conference earlier this week, saying that โ€œthereโ€™s clearly a cost to support unlimitedโ€, according to CNET.

โ€œIs there pressure? Yeah,โ€ he said. โ€œThereโ€™s a challenge for all engineers to work on how we get the cost structure down.โ€

While Australian users mostly pay a high price for mobile data, in the United States these packages have offered unlimited downloads for several years. It is only recently that many telcos have begun reducing the amount of data that users can download.
