Social network giant Facebook is planning to launch “something awesome” this week, according to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

Reuters is reporting Zuckerberg as saying the company will be releasing a new product next week, but has not specified what it will be.

There is rampant speculation at the moment regarding many of Facebook’s unofficial projects: a new photo-based iOS app, a native iPad app, a HTML5 app and even a piece of desktop software.

However, TechCrunch has reported it is unlikely that next week’s announcement will be for the long-awaited iPad app.
