Angry Birds maker Rovio Mobile gets $42 million investment

Rovio Mobile, the app developer behind runaway iPhone hit Angry Birds, has raised $US42 million in a funding round from Accel Partners, Atomico and Felicis Ventures.

According to GigaOM, Atomico founder Niklas Zennstrom, who also is listed as one of the founders of VoIP company Skype, will be joining the Rovio board.

A valuation for the company was not revealed.

Angry Birds has been not only one of the most popular and profitable games on the App Store, but Rovio has also been successful in leveraging that popularity across other merchandise.

So far the app has been downloaded millions of times, Rovio has sold millions of Angry Birds toys and there are plans to turn the game into an animated series.
