Google’s Android mobile operating system is now the most popular operating system in the United States among new smartphone buyers, according to new figures from Nielsen.

The company has released new data showing that Android has taken 32% of the market out of smartphone buyers who purchased a phone within the last six months, with the iOS taking out second place at 26%.

The data is sure to be a blow for competitors Apple and Microsoft, which are working hard to combat the growing popularity of the open-source OS.

RIM’s BlackBerry OS controlled 25% of the market, taking third place. The figures are a massive change from the start of the year, when Android had just 14% of the market, with RIM and iOS taking out 35% and 32% respectively.
