Internet giant Google plans to allow users to disable the conversation view in Gmail, thus allowing readers to view their messages in chronological order.

The issue has been a point of contention among Gmail users, with several users complaining on the Google Gmail Help Forum that users should be able to view their messages in whichever way they choose.

“Threading enthusiasts say they spend less mental energy drawing connections between related messages and that their inboxes are much less cluttered. On the other hand, email traditionalists like many former Outlook users think conversation view just complicates something that has worked for years,” Google said in a blog post.

The blog post includes a quote from Senmina-SCI senior information systems engineer Russ Midford. He says, “I personally prefer threaded conversations, but as an administrator who still needs to support some long-time Outlook users on Gmail, the unthreaded option is like gold.”

The feature is set to be rolled out over the next few days.
