Optus has been named as one of five global providers of a new piece of technology that will allow companies to distribute cloud-based information technology services to customers.

Announced by VMware at VMWorld, the new VCloud Director technology will allow admins to control a piece of distribution software that will allow users to access directly. ITNews.com.au describes the technology as similar to an enterprise app store, but using cloud technology.

“The cloud is a once in a generation change for a telco,” Bill Chang, executive vice president of the SingTel Business Group told the site. “We used to launch a new product every nine months, now its every few weeks.”

“SingTel will become the fourth utility – like water, power and gas – providing info/comm services on tap, on-demand.”
