Domain name registrar Melbourne IT has urged businesses to consider taking up the “.co” domain name, with the application period to begin in just under one month.

While .co was previously used as the national domain for the Republic of Colombia, it can now be used as a “second level domain”, available to companies around the world.

“The impending launch of .co provides an excellent opportunity for companies who may have missed out on their preferred .com domain name to seek to register for a recognisable alternative in the form of the new .co domain,” Melbourne IT’s executive vice president of digital brand services, Kanchan Mhatre, said in a statement.

“The fact it is so recognisable also means that existing global trademark holders should attempt to secure their domain names in .co as soon as the Sunrise period opens to avoid disappointment.”
