The Boy Genius Report has reported that Motorola is gearing up to release a phone that will run on Google’s Android 2.0 operating system.

It is the latest of many handsets to be released running the software, which is beginning to gain popularity as an alternative to Nokia’s Symbian OS, which dominates most of the market.

The new Moto Droid handset, which features a touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard, is rumoured to come with Android 2.0, while current phones currently run Android 1.6.

The new Android software will come with new menu icons, social networking integration, support for Microsoft Exchange, universal search and a “car mode” that makes it easier for users to navigate menus while driving.
