Queensland Rail commuters will now be able to access free wireless internet as part of a new Government infrastructure initiative.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan has said that as part of a network that will allow security footage to be monitored in a control room at the city’s Central Station, commuters can now access free wireless.

ย

“This means that commuters will be able to log on to the internet and catch up on emails on their train ride to work or while waiting at a station,” she said yesterday.

ย

“Access to wireless internet is becoming more and more important in people’s professional and social lives, and this technology means a journey on the train can become even more attractive to commuters.”

ย

The scheme will cost between $1 million and $4 million, and will be available on every train and station platform on the network by early 2010. So far, it is the only metropolitan transport network to offer free wireless access.
