Yesterday I was talking to an entrepreneur who is leading a very fast growing company. It seems each week he’s adding new staff and one of his big worries is safeguarding the culture that he has carefully built up.
Part of this culture is around formal workplace policies, such as occupational health and safety, discrimination and bullying.
It’s one thing to hand new hires a bit of paper outlining your policies on their first day. But it is crucial this is followed up with some sort of training to explain and emphasise the importance of the policy to your culture.
Many parts of OH&S and discrimination are commonsense, but bullying needs a bit of extra attention. Bullying can be subtle and difficult for managers to spot, so workers need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities, and the process by which problems are reported.
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has a great bullying factsheet that can provide a starting point.
