Do you remember making potions when you were little? Collecting ingredients from the garden – or pantry – to make interesting, sometimes disgusting, concoctions for hours on end?
I certainly do, and that’s why I was thrilled to discover a family-owned Victorian business that creates beautiful, and magical, potion kits for youngsters.
I first met sisters Alicia Gordon and Jacinta Evans from The Little Potion Co in 2022 and have now purchased a number of their kits for family members.
I’ve also spent hours making potions with the kits with my daughter.
These are no ordinary kits; they are filled with sparkling and bubbly ingredients – packaged in reusable cloth bags and bottles and made from non-toxic substances like bicarbonate soda, citric acid and biodegradable glitter – as well as instructions for making the perfect spell or potion.
The kits’ whimsical themes are designed to spark imaginary play of the best kind, and the larger sets come with affirmations to inspire young hearts and minds.
There’s the Moonlight Waters mindful kit, with spells to help their maker calm a “stormy mind” or gain confidence when they feel like “a fish out of water”.
Or there’s Wild Adventure, with instructions to make a potion for “travelling and starting new adventures” or one that will “create a navigational tool for finding magical realms”.
There’s sets for festive occasions and Halloween, clever add-ons like mini mixing bowls, spoons and cauldrons, and sets for kids’ birthday parties too.
The Little Potion Co was founded in 2019 and its rapid growth since landed the business the 44th spot on this year’s Smart50 Awards, and a spot on the shortlist for the Smart50 Retail Award.
It’s gone from making humble kitchen creations to a local manufacturing business with 200 stockists around the country, including The Iconic, and a team of six staff.
Future plans for growth include tapping into a growing demand for subscription and educator packs, say Gordon and Evans.
This demand for The Little Potion Co products is no surprise to me: Gordon and Evans have created a flourishing business that puts a little bit of magic back into the everyday.
But don’t just take my word for it. This is what my daughter, one of Little Potion Co’s biggest fans says:
“I like making my own potions to put in with the other potions … I love making big potions.”
Let’s face it, who doesn’t?
