David Jones has confirmed that it is reducing the working hours of some of its 10,000 staff, due to a drop in consumer spending.
DJs said that staff working in departments selling big-ticket items, such as plasma-screen TVs and furniture, have had their working hours cut back by as much as 20% – from 40 hours a week to 32 hours.
However, CEO Mark McInnes said that no jobs had been cut.
The retailer employs around 10,000 staff at its 36 stores, 95% of whom are on a full-time or permanent part-time basis.
