Melba Industries, which supplies industrial textiles used in protective clothing for firefighters, has been placed in administration.

Matt Byrnes and Greg Keith of Grant Thornton’s Melbourne office have been appointed joint administrators.

The administrators will continue to trade and will lobby the Government for help with finding a buyer for the business.

“We will be actively seeking the support of the Government to ensure this business is given every opportunity to continue to supply these essential products.” Byrnes said in a statement.

The company is expected to be placed on the market next week and a meeting of creditors will be called for 5 March.

The company employs 170 people at two sites in Melbourne.

Melba is an exclusive supplier of protective fabrics for Victoria’s CFA and Metropolitan Fire departments, Australia’s armed forces and the automotive sector.
