Riviera claims to be the biggest luxury boat building facility in the southern hemisphere. Founded in 1980 in the northern Sydney suburb of Terrey Hills, with just five staff, the company now employs around 1150 people, turns over $320 million a year and produces about 380 luxury cruisers each year.
Now based in Coomera on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Riviera employs a dealership network that spans more than 30 countries.
CEO Wes Moxey (pictured) started in big steel shipyards before moving to Riviera 24 years ago. A short time later, in the aftermath of the 1987 sharemarket crash (which hurt many industries especially involved in “discretionary spend” markets), Moxey took on the tough and long-haul job of re-building the company.
“I went at it with the principle that it was easier to get forgiveness than approval,” he says. Wes was part of a management buyout four years ago, and has overseen the continued and steady improvement in company’s prospects.
