NAB account glitch fixed, but thousands still affected by delays

A computer glitch that delayed transactions for millions of NAB customers and left them without pay over the weekend has been fixed, according to the bank, although it admits nearly 20,000 accounts are still experiencing problems.

The announcement comes after the glitch became worse over the weekend, with transactions in some accounts doubling up, leaving accounts in debit. Several customers have also been charged fees, interest and have had financial deals delayed due to the problems.

In a statement this morning, NAB said it has identified and fixed the issue which caused the initial delay, saying most customers should now see their accounts reverted back to normal.

“Over the weekend, NAB has identified and fixed the problem which caused the payment and transaction processing delays which the bank has experienced in recent days. NAB can now advise that for the vast majority of our customers these issues have been resolved.”

NAB has also taken out full-page advertisements in major newspapers apologising for the debacle, which has now stretched on for five days.

The bank was forced to open branches on both Saturday and Sunday, after customers were told they could take out a limited amount of cash.

NAB also says the issue of duplicate and multiple transactions should have been resolved for most customers – but there are nearly 20,000 accounts still having issues. The bank says it will work to compensate any customers who are affected.

“Some additional work still needs to be done on around 19,155 remaining accounts where these instances of duplicate or multiple transactions have occurred. We have a process in place to do this and will continue to work to bring these accounts up-to-date throughout the course of today and overnight tonight.”

The bank also says that for those customers put out of pocket, “a process will be put in place to identify and put right instances where NAB customers may have inadvertently incurred fees, interest or other charges”.

But it may be too late for some customers, who have complained that due to the delays several bill payments and even construction deals have been put on hold. Thousands of customers also went through the weekend without their regular wages.

The bank has still not revealed any further technical details of the glitch.
