Research firm Gartner has identified 10 new technologies to watch over the next two years, with organisations told to keep a sharp on the horizon for developments that could help their business.

“We are highlighting these 10 mobile technologies that should be on every organisation’s radar screen,” Nick Jones, vice president and analyst said in a statement,

“These mobile technologies were selected because they will evolve in ways that affect corporate strategies, significant numbers of customers or employees will adopt or expect them, or they will address particular mobile challenges that organisations will face through 2011.”

The 10 mobile technologies to watch in 2010 and 2011 include:

  • Bluetooth 3+4, enabling faster wireless transmission.
  • Mobile web, with more mobile-based websites set to be developed.
  • Mobile widgets, installable web applications set to grow as apps also develop.
  • Mobile AD tools, development tools which allow more sophisticated programs to run.
  • App Stores, with more manufacturers now entering the market the industry will heat up.
  • Enhanced location awareness, as more phones come with GPS capabilities.
  • Cellular broadband, as faster and more sophisticated carrier networks are rolled out.
  • Touchscreens, as currently about half of all smartphones shipped contain touchscreens.
  • M2M, whose systems include smart grids, meter readings and point of sale services.
  • Device-independent security, which will not a single technology will assist businesses through cloud-based security services.
