Solar companies say renewable energy legislation secures their future

Solar retailers say their industry is now back on its feet following Parliament’s approval of the new Renewable Energy Target legislation, which requires 20% of Australia’s power to be renewable by 2020.

The legislation, which passed with bipartisan support, also provides a solar credit scheme worth between $4000 and $6000.

Solar companies say announcement is a welcome one following the scrapping of two major solar panel rebates in June, which prompted some businesses to reevaluate their entire sales structure.

Guy Montgomery, general manager of Queensland-based Solar Xpress, said in June that his business was in “chaos” following the Government’s decision to scrap two major rebates. But now, he says his business has a solid base for growth.

“Things are back on track. We did fear for our business, but we had a feeling there would be a new rebate scheme. It was uncertain times for us, and we wouldn’t like to do that again.”

“I’m upbeat about the new scheme, and so are the customers. The phones are ringing, general enquiry levels are rising and the business looks set to grow.”

Liam Hunt, communications manager for Adelaide-based The Solar Shop, says his business is now set to survive the next five years after a tumultuous few months.

“This announcement gives all our staff the confidence to come to work knowing the industry is safe. That’s been the real concern over the last two months, not knowing where the industry was going, but now we have a great incentive scheme and it’s a bright future after we’ve been in limbo for the past two months.”

“This really gives us security for the next five years, because previously rebates were done on a regulation-basis rather than legislation. This is the first time the industry has had an incentive to get going, and that’s exactly what we need to help our business grow over the next five years, and make it stronger.”

Mark Leckenby, managing director of sustainable energy company Auzion, says his business is now recording increasing interest for solar panel deals.

“There is no income cap on solar credits so everyone is eligible and the delays created by the rebate application process will be eliminated.”.

“We have always been in support of the Government’s move to the new solar credit scheme which has some benefits compared with the old rebate…Solar grid connect power systems are a great solution for home owners or business operators wanting to be more sustainable and save money on their energy use.”
