iPhone users around the world rejoiced last week when eBay-owned voice over internet company Skype launched its application for the iPhone, and recorded a million downloads in just two days.
ย
But users of the new application have encountered problems with the service, with different countries having different policies about how the application can be used.
ย
Aย Free Press letterย to the US group the FCC says: “The Skype voice overย IP application on the Apple iPhone can make and receive calls over aย wi-fiย connection, but cannot make or receive calls over AT&T’s 3G network.”
ย
The letter claims that the company is restricting Skype access on its 3G network, similar to the plans of German group Deutsche Telekom, which plans to cancel contracts of subscribers who install and use the Skype program.
ย
So far there have been no complaints of Skype trouble in Australia, but as more carriers become aware of the application’s possibilities it may fall victim to policies outlawing its use.ย
