Two US inventors are working on a car key that will prevent the driver from talking on their mobile phone or sending messages while driving.

The “Key2SafeDriving”, developed by university researchers Xuesong Zhou and Wallace Curry, will send a wireless signal to the driver’s mobile phone that blocks calls and texts.

The invention is being marketed towards parents as a way to stop their teenage children from being distracted by their phones.

The key follows a number of similar devices, after several US states have ramped up restrictions against teenagers using mobile phones while driving. Ford released a “MyKey” device in October, allowing parents to control the speed at which their teenage children drive. The group says it will be a standard device from 2010.
