The founders of the Clarence Street Cyclery, Tony and Christine Cook, talk about their long ride to bicycle retailing success.
It’s been a long ride for Tony and Christine Cook since they first opened their bicycle shop in Sydney in 1975. But from modest beginnings, the Clarence Street Cyclery has been transformed into a three-storey bicycle heaven and a Sydney cycling icon.
One store maxim that Tony says has kept the business at the forefront, and successfully, is that the customer comes second. “If you look after your staff like family, and you care and you treat them well adn let them share in the rewards, what manifests is that they then look after your customers like you wouldn’t believe.”
