Troubled internet search engine company Yahoo is offering free email addresses under two different domain names in an effort to gain more users for the site.

Users can now register email addresses with the domain names of ‘.ymail’ and ‘.rocketmail’, the first time Yahoo has offered email addresses with names other than its host name since its establishment in 1997.

Yahoo offered free email after the $80 million acquisition of Four11 Corp, which included the .rocketmail domain, but has not accepted new users for the domain until now.

John Kremer, a vice president of Yahoo and in charge of the email department, says: “We realised we needed to expand the universe of Yahoo mail.”

Yahoo is the market leader in email accounts with 266 million users worldwide, according to research firm Comscore Inc. Microsoft follows closely behind with 264 million users.
