Rupert Murdoch on the journalism of tomorrow

News Corporation chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch says the role of journalists is changing dramatically with the rise of the internet. Newspaper reporters are increasingly expected to provide content for print, online, radio and video. The Daily Telegraph in London and financial wire service Bloomberg are leading the way.

Speaking at a news conference after the company’s annual shareholder briefing, Murdoch said he expects the mobile phone revolution to fundamentally change journalism, through the emergence of citizen journalism and by giving reporters another way to file their story.

It’s already happening here. Ninemsn staff will be supplied with video-capable mobile phones from next year to send material back faster than traditional methods, the Australian newspaper reports.

Murdoch also said he’s not worried about the writer’s strike in the US. “In a sense, it helps us. It’s cheaper to run repeats.”
