Windows 10 is marketing and promotional activity, Microsoft says

The launch of Windows 10 is a “marketing and promotional activity”, according to Microsoft.

The tech corporation made the announcement in its most recent quarterly report, which was submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission last week.

After announcing in January this year the latest version of the popular operating system would be available free to those using Windows 7 and 8, Microsoft said the newest launch is a marketing and promotional activity “in part because the offer is being made available for free to existing users.”

According to technology website Computerworld, the announcement was made for accounting purposes.

A range of Microsoft devices are tipped to be updated with Windows 10 for Australian users, including the Surface 3 and the 4G Lumia 640XL phablet.

Microsoft has not given a release date beyond saying it will release the program in 190 countries in the northern summer.
