Spending on online advertising is set to defy the growing global economic wobbles to grow at almost 20% over this year, according to a new study reported by Cnet.

Spending on online advertising is set to defy the growing global economic wobbles to grow at almost 20% over this year, according to a new study reported by Cnet.

Advertisers are expected to spend $US23.8 billion on internet advertising in 2008, close to 20% up on last year’s $US19.9 billion, research firm JupiterResearch says.

That means stealing business away from the off-line advertising world. The 8.4% of the total US advertising spend snared by online in 2007 is set to increase to 9.6% this year, 10.7% the next, and 14.3% by 2013.

If that prediction comes true, spending on online advertising around the world will top $US43 billion by 2013, having grown at a compound annual rate of around 13%.

The most popular form of online advertising around the world will continue to be search, with Jupiter predicting it will grow from $US9.1 billion last year to $US20.9 billion by 2013.

But the big mover is expected to be online video ads. Currently capturing a spend of about $US1 billion, spending on video ads is expected to surge to $US5.1 billion by 2013 at the expense of static and text ads.
