Australian smartphone users are switching to Android, staying loyal to Apple and abandoning Windows Phone, according to new Kantar Worldpanel figures.

According to the figures, Australia remains an Android stronghold, with the Google-backed platform running on 62.4% of new Australian smartphones in the quarter to May, up from 58.2% a year earlier.

While Appleโ€™s customers remained loyal, the Californian tech giant also failed to grow its Australian marketshare over the past year, recording a statistically insignificant dip from 28.6% to 28.5%.

The combined marketshare of the two dominant platforms โ€“ Android and Apple โ€“ rose from 86.8% a year ago to 90.9%.

Meanwhile, despite the introduction of Windows Phone 8 and a range of new Lumia devices, including the Lumia 920 and 520, Microsoftโ€™s Australian marketshare fell from 6.7% to 5.6%.

While there was a slight uptick in Blackberry use with the release of BlackBerry 10 โ€“ from 0.2% to 0.4% marketshare โ€“ Symbian fell from 3.7% to 1.7% and all other platforms fell from 2.7% to 1.4%.
