Microsoft’s Windows Blue project is aimed at integrating the desktop version of Windows 8 with Windows Phone 8, and is being carried out separately to the company’s efforts to develop a next generation operating system, according to reports.
DigiTimes reports sources within Microsoft say the Windows Blue project is an independent project being run separately to the teams developing both the desktop version of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
The aim of the project is to integrate the desktop and smartphone versions of Windows – which are currently incompatible – in order to better compete against Google’s Android and Chrome platforms.
Microsoft is reportedly increasingly concerned about the prospect of Android-based notebooks competing against Windows.
According to the reports, Microsoft is also developing the next generation version of Windows, expected to be released in October, independent of Windows Blue.
