Twitter has reset the passwords of thousands of users, following a spate of high profile accounts being hacked.
However, according to the BBC, the social media giant has since admitted that some of the accounts with reset passwords might not have been hacked.
“When we believe an account may have been compromised, we reset the password and send an email letting the account owner know this has happened along with information about creating a new password. This is a routine part of our processes to protect our users,โ Twitter says in a statement.
“In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised.โ
“We apologise for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused.”
The company is not disclosing the source of the issue or the number of accounts that it believes were impacted.
