Samsung has become a platinum member of the Linux Foundation, a not-for-profit standards and advocacy body for the Linux operating system.

Platinum membership is the highest level of corporate membership offered by the organisation, and is currently also held by IBM, Intel, NEC, Oracle, Fujitsu, and Qualcomm.

In a statement, Samsung vice president WonJoo Park said: “We’re looking forward to increasing collaboration and support for our growing portfolio of Linux-based devices and to making contributions that advance Linux”.

The Linux kernel forms the base for the Android platform, which in turn is used in Samsung’s Galaxy series of smartphones and tablet devices.
