The government of Iceland has announced that it intends to migrate its entire public service servers and desktops over to open source platforms, standards, and software.
According to a blog on the European Commission website, the mass migration includes the entire Icelandic public service, the city of Reykjavik and the National Hospital.
The institutions join the Icelandic education system, which is four years into a similar mass migration programme that has seen the majority of secondary schools switch to an open source course management platform, and five schools switch entirely to open source software.
Over the coming year, the government plans to establish a “common infrastructure” for the migration, including documenting the maturity of open source options relative to their closed source counterparts, as well as the first project tenders.
