Mozilla, the not-for-profit developer of the Firefox web browser, has announced it is launching its own app store, and will open it for app submissions next week.

According to a Mozilla Foundation blog, the organisation intends to create an operating system, platform, and device independent app store known as the Mozilla Marketplace.

The idea is that apps will be written in web standard languages (including HTML5, CSS, and Java) and therefore be able to work on any device that supports Firefox.

Mozilla hopes that reserving an app name, along with promotion in the Mozilla Marketplace launch later this year, will be sufficient incentive to get developers to create apps for the platform.
