Microsoft has revealed its latest operating system, Windows 8, to developers at a conference in the United States.

The reveal is the first major look at the software, which has been given a major update from its previous iteration, Windows 7.

The software is built to incorporate more touch controls, and has been distributed to developers on tablets. Early indicators suggest developers are impressed with the new interface, which emulates the design of Windows 7 mobile.

Gizmodo has written the touch controls on the device are โ€œfantasticโ€.

โ€œIt is, in fact, the most usable gesture-based interface on the market. It goes beyond what Apple has done by quite a bit. The entire operating system is navigable in a way that is both completely new, and yet familiar within a few minutes of use.โ€

However, the final build of the software is still over a year away, and Microsoft is not expected to reveal a street date for some time.
