Apple may be looking to invest $US1 billion in a Sharp factory in order to produce more iPad and iPhone LCD displays, a new report from Reuters has forecast.

Anonymous sources have informed the publication that the investment will take place, while a separate investment in Toshiba is also predicted as the business is expected to diversify its supply base.

MF Global FXA Securities analyst David Rubenstein also told the publication that such an investment seems likely.

“We think it is highly possible that Apple will make an investment in Sharp’s Kameyama plant to the tune of around $1 billion in order to secure a stable supply of screens for iPhones and iPads,” he said.

“This would have a material impact on Sharp’s profitability.”
