The BlackBerry App World has now hit 15,000 apps, with 5,000 of these being added within the last four months.

Through its official Twitter account, BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion confirmed the market now has over 15,000 applications โ€“ but that is still well below rivals Apple and Google.

Currently the Apple App Store has over 300,000 applications, the Android Market counting over 100,000. But RIM has also previously said it won’t rely as much on apps as other manufacturers.

The company is planning to release a BlackBerry tablet in the first quarter of next year, called the PlayBook. It is expected the device will play apps from the App World.
