An Ovum analyst says the business community is still a while away from embracing the Apple iPad due to a number of security concerns.

Even though Apple has sold over three million of the gadgets, analyst Claudio Castelli told The Australian that the lack of security features in the device is keeping IT departments from incorporating it into daily use.

“You can download anything on the iPad because no security applications have been developed for the enterprise yet,” Castelli said.

“It’s not enterprise-friendly yet because it’s completely open, so I doubt businesses will be adopting its widespread use at the moment.”

While Castelli says corporates will embrace the iPad eventually, he says the gadget is still extremely new and the business community needs time to catch on.

“There is a process of consumerisation happening in workplaces at the moment, and although it’s still early days for the iPad to be an enterprise-grade device, it will be soon,” the analyst said.

“I have no doubt the iPad will be used in workplaces but it will take some time, in the same way as the iPhone – which was released as a consumer device – took some time before business found the value in it.”
