Amazon has launched an electronic book reader, called the Kindle, which it hopes will revolutionise the way people buy and read text-based visual content.

According to TechCrunch, the Kindle is basically a simple computer about the size of your average book, with a 15-centimetre monochromatic display using easy to read E-Ink technology.

It has a small keyboard for text or web searches and 256MB internal storage. The idea is to download your favourite online books, magazines and newspapers – many of which are or will be available through Amazon, naturally – which you can then take around and read on your Kindle.

All very snazzy, but there is a downside – the Kindle costs $US400. You could get quite a few actual books for that price.
